Many
ISP's ( Internet Service Providers) provide free
web storage space of 2-10 Megs for you to display
your own family history web pages to the world.
Often they also provide some guidance as to
website construction and tips on building your
website. However, they rarely provide any actual
one-on-one help for your questions. You are left
on your own for that !
If your
ISP doesn't provide free web space others, i.e.
US GENWEB, Rootsweb, Tripod and GeoCities. You can find free guest books,
site counters and mailing lists, all necessary to
know who or if anyone is using your information.
With just a little searching you also can find
inexpensive shareware or freeware programs, i.e.
Gene Stark's gedcom converter, to convert your
GEDCOM files to web pages.
These
services will provide you tips on how to organize
your pages so they will be easy to use, view and
load in a reasonable amount of time, but they
never seem to get the point across completely
from some of the genealogy sites I have visited.
The books I have listed give you a great amount
of very important information in page
organization and graphic design and lots more,
all a must, if you want your visitors to return.
They often include a CD full of freeware or
shareware programs and web ready graphics to use.
The most
overlooked item by prospective webmasters is
getting found by those you want to share your
information with. Many family history sites are
lucky to get one visitor a day. A real
disappointment for all the hours you have spent
researching your family history. You must
register with all the search engines on the web,
a very important and often overlooked step. I
have a included a link at the bottom to what I
believe is the one of best values on the Web to
get your site registered and a domain like your-family.org.
Good Luck
!

The key to getting your web site
visited is the search engines. There are many
different services you can use to sign up with
the search services. Register-It offers free a
eleven search engine submit and a $39.99 for 1
URL and $59.99 for 2 URLs and a one year license
to be registered with up to 400 of the top
performing search tools, free newsletters with
great tips and suggestions and a host of other
free and pay services. I have used their services
and they have been able to get my web site listed
on the search engines. They also offer a lot of
free suggestions and programs to make your web
site a nice place to visit.

|
| Most of the free web site
services come with a healthy amount of
advertising and these long un meaningful names
such as http:/·/home.earthlink.net/~jdoe/.
These are so ugly and meaningless! How would you
like to have a family history web site with a
name like Hupp-family.genealogy.org
or John.Hupp.org. It
is possible and even for free, no InterNic
registration, no hassle to find a web hosting
service, just follow these links: The
'Genealogy On Line Network' will register your genealogy
site in their genealogy.org domain for free!
Check the details at Genealogy
On Line Network..
Once you get that new name for your web site
from genealogy.org or MailBank don't forget to Register-It
!

| If you really want your own
personal web address register a and check Domain
names at GoDaddy.com,
this is one of the best services I have found.
The offer webSite hosting, domain name
registration and transfer, forwarding, and much
more ! Search tips:
search for YourLastName.com (e.g.,
Athey.com), almost certainly already reserved,
then try:
* Search for YourFullName
(GeorgeAthey.com)
* Use hyphens: Your-Name.com
(George-Athey.com)
* Combine your name with other words:
Atheys-Home.com, Athey-Family.com,
Athey-Residence.com
* Try searching for any of these same names in
.net or .org.
* Look for other kinds of names that relate to
the content of your site: Our-Athey-Family.net,
Athey-Genealogy.com, Atheys-at-Home.com, be
creative, as domains are registered the harder it
will be to find one you like.
Now that your have registered your domain name
be sure to check out the free services of MyInternet.com.
This service will redirect your new domain to
your free web space and provide you the ability
to have unlimited email address with your new
domain. This is one of the best run free services
around for webmasters !
